Sales Tax and Credit Card Fees at the Event Level

How Sales Tax and Credit Card Fees Are Calculated at the Event Level

This AttendStar Admin feature charges Sales Tax and Credit Card fees at the “event level” and not at the ticket level.

How to Locate Sales Tax and Credit Card Fees for Your Event

  1. Go to the AttendStar Event Manager client Dashboard
  2. Under the Overview tab, click Edit Event.
  3. Under the Advanced tab, Sales Tax and Credit Card Fees settings will be at the bottom of the page.
    1. Note: Call AttendStar at (615) 223-1973 to update Sales Tax and Credit Card Fees settings.

Advantages to Calculating Sales Tax and Credit Card Fees at the Event Level

  1. Client-set credit card fees when using Stripe are exact, and the ticket buyer is charged .30 per order, regardless of how many tickets are in the order.
  2. The ticket buyer will see sales tax and credit card fees on step two of the checkout process.
  3. Charging sales tax and credit card fees separate from generic fees encourages the ticket buyer to buy tickets online on AttendStar, rather than at the gate. This prevents delay of sales and makes simplifies advertising planning, helping the client to sell more tickets!

Note: The ticket buyer will be charged fees at checkout that are in addition to the advertised ticket price. Ticket buyers will only see this additional information when sales tax and credit card fees are calculated at the event level.

The calculation of sales tax and credit card fees depends on which payment method the client uses for the event.

First, the client must decide who pays which fees:

  • Sales Tax - Client or Ticket Buyer?
  • Credit Card Fees - Client or Ticket Buyer?
  • Ticket Fees - Client or Ticket Buyer?

Stripe: If a client uses Stripe for their event, the AttendStar ticket fee and phone order fees are not taxable, because the client is not collecting those fees. AttendStar collects those fees and pays the taxes. Clients are only collecting the ticket price and the credit card fees.

In this example a $25.00 with a .0825 (8 ¼ %) sales tax and 2.9% + .30  per ORDER, and a $1.50 ticket fee (AttendStar) is calculated like:

1

Ticket Price

$25.00

The face value of the ticket

2

Ticket Fee

$1.50

AttendStar Ticket Fee (We collect this so no sales tax)

3

Sales Tax

$2.06

Calculated on Ticket Price only.

4

Credit Card

$1.13

.83 + .30 of #1, #2 and #3

5

Customer Pays

29.69

Total of  1 - 4 (Client can pass on to the customer all fees or any part of the fees.)

6

Client Keeps

25.00

Authorize.net: If the client uses Authorize.Net, the client is collecting all fees and AttendStar will bill the client for AttendStar's fees. Ticket buyers pay sales tax on all fees, except credit card fees, since the client is collects the money before paying AttendStar.

In this example a $25.00 ticket with a .0825 (8 ¼ %) sales tax, and 2.9% + .30  per ORDER, and a $1.50 ticket fee (AttendStar) is calculated like:

1

Ticket Price

$25.00

The face value of the ticket

2

Ticket Fee

$1.50

AttendStar Ticket Fee (Client collects and AttendStar bills client)

3

Sales Tax

$2.19

Calculated on #1 and #2

4

Credit Card

$1.13

.83 + .30 (only per ORDER) of #1,#2 and #3 This depends on the client's Authorize.net rate.  This rate will NOT be the same for all card.  MasterCard Corporate and AMEX are more than 2.9, but VISA and MC are less than 2.9

5

Customer Pays

$29.82

Total of  1 - 4 (Client can pass on to the customer all fees or any part of the fees.)

7

Client Keeps

$25.00

(this varies because of credit card fees)

AttendStar Payment Processing: If a client uses AttendStar Payment Processing, then AttendStar sends the client a check for ticket prices and credit card fees (if AttendStar recoups them for the client). In this case, the ticket pays tax on the ticket price only.

In this example a $25.00 ticket with a .0825 (8 ¼ %) sales tax, and 3.5% credit card fees, and a $1.50 ticket fee (AttendStar) is calculated like:

1

Ticket Price

$25.00

The face value of the ticket

2

Ticket Fee

$1.50

AttendStar Ticket Fee, we collect

3

Sales Tax

$2.06

.0825 X Ticket Price because we collect ticket fees.

4

Credit Card

$1.00

3.5% of #1, #2 and #3

5

Customer Pays

$29.56

Total of  1 - 4 (Client can pass on to the customer all fees or any part of the fees.)

6

Client Check

$27.06

Out of this, the client would pay sales tax of $2.06 and keep the $25.00 if the client passed all the fees to the ticket buyer.

7

Client Keeps

$25.00

If the client has ticket buyer pay all the fees

Note: If the client is adding any other kind of fees at the ticket level, those additional fees are also subject to sales tax or credit card fees using Event Level Sales Tax and Credit Card Fees. Ensure not to add sales tax or credit fees in both places when creating the event.

Note: The client is responsible for paying sales tax, when applicable.  AttendStar can collect sales tax when using APP and report it when using Authorize.net or Stripe, but the client must pay it to its taxing authority.

Note: When the ticket buyer sees "Sales Tax" during check out (if the client is collecting sales tax), it might not add up to the charge that is being placed on their credit card. The charge on their card is for their purchase total, but the sales tax applies only to either the base price of ticket (if the client uses Stripe or AttendStar Payment Processing), or the base price of the ticket, plus AttendStar ticket/phone order fees (if using Authorize.Net).
