How Sales Tax and Credit Card Fees Are Calculated at the Event Level

This feature will charge Sales Tax and Credit Card fees at the “event level” and not at the ticket level.   This will be located on the Advanced Tab when you edit your event. At the moment you need to call us at (615) 223-1973 to update this for you.

There are some advantages to this.

  1. You credit card fees when using Stripe and exact and the .30 per ORDER gets charges regardless of how many tickets are in the order.
  2. Your ticket buyer has begun the checkout process and does not see the sales tax and credit card fees until step two of the checkout.
  3. If you include sales tax and credit card fees in the generic Fees column customers may think they can buy tickets at a ticket outlet or at the entrance cheaper.  This delays your sales and makes advertising planning harder.  Does not help cash flow either.

There are some disadvantages to this.

  1. Advertised ticket prices are not the same as the customer is expecting at checkout.

The checkout would add this additional information ONLY when sales tax and credit card fees are calculated at the event level.

How sales tax and credit card fees are calculated depends on which payment system you are using for your event.

STRIPE

In this example a $25.00 with a .0825 (8 ¼ %) sales tax and 2.9% + .30  per ORDER, and a $1.50 ticket fee (AttendStar) is calculated like:

1

Ticket Price

$25.00

The face value of the ticket

2

Ticket Fee

$1.50

AttendStar Ticket Fee (We collect this so no sales tax)

3

Sales Tax

$2.06

Calculated on Ticket Price only.

4

Credit Card

$1.13

.83 + .30 of #1, #2 and #3

5

Customer Pays

29.69

Total of  1 - 4 (You can pass on to the customer all fees or any part of the fees.)

6

You Keep

25.00

AUTHORIZE.NET

In this example a $25.00 ticket with a .0825 (8 ¼ %) sales tax, and 2.9% + .30  per ORDER, and a $1.50 ticket fee (AttendStar) is calculated like:

1

Ticket Price

$25.00

The face value of the ticket

2

Ticket Fee

$1.50

AttendStar Ticket Fee (You collect and we bill you)

3

Sales Tax

$2.19

Calculated on #1 and #2

4

Credit Card

$1.13

.83 + .30 (only per ORDER) of #1,#2 and #3 This depends on your Authorize.net rate.  This rate will NOT be the same for all card.  MasterCard Corporate and AMEX are more than 2.9, but VISA and MC are less than 2.9

5

Customer Pays

$29.82

Total of  1 - 4 (You can pass on to the customer all fees or any part of the fees.)

7

You Keep

$25.00

(this varies because of credit card fees)

If you are using AttendStar Payment Processing, then it looks like this:

In this example a $25.00 ticket with a .0825 (8 ¼ %) sales tax, and 3.5% credit card fees, and a $1.50 ticket fee (AttendStar) is calculated like:

1

Ticket Price

$25.00

The face value of the ticket

2

Ticket Fee

$1.50

AttendStar Ticket Fee, we collect

3

Sales Tax

$2.06

.0825 X Ticket Price because we collect ticket fees.

4

Credit Card

$1.00

3.5% of #1, #2 and #3

5

Customer Pays

$29.56

Total of  1 - 4 (You can pass on to the customer all fees or any part of the fees.)

6

Your Check

$27.06

Out of this you would pay sales tax of $2.06 and keep the $25.00 if you passed all the fees to the ticket buyer.

7

You Keep

$25.00

If you have ticket buyer pay all the fees

IMPORTANT - If you are adding any other kind of fees at the ticket level, those fees are also subject to sales tax or credit card fees using Event Level Sales Tax and Credit Card Fees.  Be careful not to add sales tax or credit fees both places.

IMPORTANT - You are always responsible for paying sales tax, when applicable. There are thousands of tax laws nationwide and each event can be unique.   AttendStar can collect it when using APP and report it when using Authorize.net or Stripe, but you still need to pay it to your taxing authority.
